Alan Morgan is a Professor in Earth Sciences at the University of Waterloo. He was educated at the University of Leicester (Double Hons, B.Sc.), completed his M.Sc. at the University of Calgary (CSPG Award), and his Ph.D. at the University of Birmingham. His doctoral work in Quaternary stratigraphy defined the type section of the Devensian (the British equivalent of the Wisconsinan of North America).
Alan's specialty is Quaternary geology, specifically with the study of Quaternary Entomology (fossil beetles) and the study of paleo- and modern ecologies and recent climate change. He has served as the Secretary-General of the XII INQUA Congress from 198 2-1987, as President of the Canadian Quaternary Association (1987-1989) and as President of the American Quaternary Association (1990-1992). He is currently Director of the Quaternary Sciences Institute at the University of Waterloo.
Alan was Executive Director of the Canadian Geoscience Council from 1988 to 1993, and has rejoined the Council for a second term as Administrative Director commencing in 1996. His responsibilities within the Council are to sustain the records of CGC by pr oducing minutes of the different meetings of the Council and the Directors; by maintaining the Web Pages reflecting Council activities, by coordinating the CGC NEWSNOTES with Bill Davitt, and the other Directors, and by communications to the public at lar ge.
Alan has also edited the Annual Report of the Canadian Geoscience Council, "The Geosciences in Canada" from 1988 to present. He was responsible for the revision of the popular booklet "Explore Careers in Geoscience" (available in both offici al languages of Canada), and has recently completed an English-only CD-ROM version entitled "Careers in Geoscience" which is available to high school teachers and science counsellors.
