    2010

    May 10-14
    GeoCanada 2010 - Canadian Earth Science R&D
    Calgary, Alberta
    www.geocanada2010.ca

GeoCanada 2010 is a once-in-ten-years showcase of Canadian Earth Science R&D and a meeting where we cast our eyes to future horizons. The Conference will take place May 10-14 in Calgary, Alberta. Many Canadian member societies will make individual contributions to this conference in the form of special sessions, core workshops etc. CFES/FCST itself will host 2 sessions:

    a) Earth Resources and the Future, Chaired by Bill Mercer (CFES/FCST President) and Ian Young (CFES/FCST Past President) The future of earth resources - metals, industrial minerals, energy minerals - has been and continues to be a topic of discussion and controversy and is a key driver in both national and international politics and economics. The session will feature a series of prominent speakers on topics ranging from metals, to energy minerals, to petroleum. Speakers will examine present resources, production, and exploration success and put this in the context of future trends of consumption. Controversy will not be avoided. The session will be of interest to exploration geoscientists, economic geologists, petroleum geoscientists and all who have an interest in the role of resources in the economy of Canada and Canada's role as a mineral supplier to the world.

    b) The future of Earth Sciences in Canada, Chaired by Elisabeth Kosters (CFES/FCST Managing Director) and Ian Young (interim) The GeoCanada Conference is a unique and valuable opportunity to take a look at the important issues and potential challenges facing Canadian Earth science over the next ten years. Together with its constituent member societies, CFES/FCST has formulated a strategic vision regarding key Canadian Earth science issues. Critical issues, such as climate change mitigation and adaptation, natural hazards, resources, energy and water are not necessarily reflected in either the organizational structure of the Canadian Earth science community or our learned and professional associations, our universities, government departments or industrial networks. We face the difficult question of how Canada should tackle these challenges in the most effective and efficient way in the near future. A workshop to prepare this session will take place during the CFES/FCST semi-annual meeting in October of 2009 and the results of this workshop will serve to finalize the session.
