ICSU’s Mission
In order to strengthen international science for the benefit of society, ICSU mobilizes the knowledge and resources of the international science community to:

  • Identify and address major issues of importance to science and society.
  • Facilitate interaction amongst scientists across all disciplines and from all countries.
  • Promote the participation of all scientists—regardless of race, citizenship, language, political stance, or gender—in the international scientific endeavour.
  • Provide independent, authoritative advice to stimulate constructive dialogue between the scientific community and governments, civil society, and the private sector.

Structure
ICSU is responsible to its General Assembly (GA) in accordance with the Statutes and Rules of Procedure.

An elected Executive Board (EB) (six Officers and eight Ordinary Members) is responsible for implementing the resolutions determined by GA.

The Officers of ICSU are: the President, the Vice-President for Scientific Planning and Review, the Vice-President for External Relations, the Secretary-General, the Treasurer, and the Past-President or President-Elect.
The Officers are responsible for the day-to-day affairs of ICSU between meetings of the Executive Board.

Assisting the EB are a number of policy, advisory and ad hoc Committees that address research and policy objectives.

ICSU contributes to the global science endeavour through the establishment of Interdisciplinary Bodies and Joint Initiatives, which have been grouped into Assessment Bodies, Thematic Organizations, Global Environmental Programmes, Monitoring/Observation, Data and Information.

In order to help strengthen science in the developing world, ICSU is now launching an initiative to create Regional Offices in Africa, the Arab Region, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean.

Administration and daily operations of ICSU are carried out by the Secretariat. It is located at 5, rue Auguste Vacquerie, 75016 Paris, France.
