    Canadian Well Logging Society

The CWLS had a productive year with increased support from individual and corporate members. The decline in membership has been reversed, indicative of both the improved health of the Oil and Gas industry and the excellent technical program provided by the Society. Personal membership grew by 17 per cent to 420 members and corporate membership grew by 37 per cent to 66 members.

The CWLS held its Annual General Meeting this February in Calgary. The president of the Society for 1995-1996 term is Mr. Winston Karel with Amoco Canada Petroleum. Two new lifetime Honorary members were inducted at the AGM. In recognition of their outstanding contributions to the advancement and well being of the Society, E.R. (Ross) Crain and Al Heslop were awarded Honorary membership status.

The President's award for the best technical presentation at a luncheon meeting was given to Jean-Remy Oleson from Schlumberger Well Services for his presentation of the APS (Accelerator Porosity Sonde) Neutron logging tool.

The monthly technical luncheon meeting program was very successful this year. A variety of interesting technical presentations were made to very well attended meetings.

The joint CWLS-CSPG Symposium held in Calgary at the end of May provided an excellent forum for the exchange of information between the two groups. Nearly two thousand delegates attended the symposium ensuring its technical and financial success.

In keeping with its relationship with the academic community, the Society awarded the $2,500 CWLS Scholarship to Mr. Xue Long Zhou, who is currently completing his Ph.D graduate studies at the University of Calgary.

A reception was held late this fall honouring the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Canadian Well Logging Society in Calgary. The CWLS is the oldest technical society of its kind in the petroleum industry. The reception was well attended and it was a pleasure to have Martin Kernahan and Barry McVicar, two of the founding members, present at the event. The CWLS Journal published this year commemorates the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Society.

The CWLS with a number of societies involved in the petroleum industry has formed the Canadian Petroleum Internet Consortium (search for "canpic") for the purpose of exchanging information regarding technical matters and other interests common to the industry.
